Quick Hits

– Macharia Gaitho is on point as far as his assessment of Kibaki’s campaign vs. Raila’s campaign. If Kibaki doesn’t shape up, and all signs are that his campaign team still has their heads up their you-know-where (and still hasn’t moved by the “how can we be ruled by a Luo” train of thought), he will lose the election and go down in history as becoming the first incumbent African president WITH a positive record / some tangible achievements to lose at the polls. The election campaign is beginning to look more and more like a replay of the referendum campaign as far as the tactics of the two sides (and unfortunately negative ethnicity)…and we all know how that went down.

– Speaking of elections, Jonathan Mueke, Westlands aspirant is profiled on Mzalendo. I was interested in his story, because he’s a young candidate who has embraced technology in his campaign…and has the guts to take on Gumo who has a propensity for winning elections by making guys get familiar with Karura forest (as one of my friends said when I was gushing about Mueke’s innovative campaign…”Yeah, but Gumo has a rungu.”)

– I’m sure this story about a Flickr and Creative Commons related lawsuit has been a hypothetical situation in a law school exam.

– Benga meets rock? There’s even an Obama song.

How does this person get to be a travel writer?

Via Kenyanentrepreneur, what I wish was atypical but it is not…just outright biased writing when it comes to reporting on Africa ati Nairobi does not have one decent hotel???? Butler? Overflowing, impoverished population? Thank God for the well-meaning white folk who are in a tough struggle to save the giraffes.

Someone please get me a gin and tonic :-)

Charterhouse Exposed and other storos

Hot on the heels of the Kroll Report, Wikileaks has now leaked documents related to the Charterhouse saga.

Charterhouse is still under statutory management, while the CBK investigates allegations of money laundering among other things. Three of the whistle blowers who first broke the story are now in exile after receiving death threats.

Unlike the leak of the Kroll report by Wikileaks, which received extensive local coverage by the media, the release of the Charterhouse documents has been given a blackout by local media (who incidentally have also been covering the KACC bill extensively) and has only been picked up by Kenyan bloggers. Makes one wonder whether there is self-censorship going with the media, and if so then how powerful are the people behind Charterhouse?

Then, there is the “so what” question. Kroll leaked…so what? Charterhouse leaked…so what? The government is not bothered (see sidebar for stories on the government’s reacion), and parliament continues to exceed its capacity for dithering by letting corruption suspects off the hook.

My two cents, there’s a lot of reason for us to get apathetic about grand corruption in Kenya since our outrage doesn’t seem to be having an effect, but I don’t think people should give up. Sustained pressure on the government can have an effect – take the Media Bill as a case in point – if the Kenyan media could extend their activism beyond issues that are of self-interest to issues that are of national interest who knows what could happen. Also, at least we are now getting to find out about corruption almost on a breaking news basis, rather than 5-6 years later in cases like Goldenberg. Still those are crumbs…we need to see people in jail, money repatriated etc.

And, I wish I could believe the ODM rhetoric . Nairobi gossip has it that moneyed folks (and not to pinpoint, but Asian business people especially) who are generally believed to be pro-Kibaki because of how well the economy is doing, are actually supporting ODM because of how tightly they are being squeezed by KRA (which is also viewed as a Kikuyu outfit). All those tax evaders and people who survived on “deals” during the Moi years are having it rough…for instance it’s now quite pleasant doing business with government for a number of reasons – you don’t require a middleman to get the tender (generally) and you get paid. So they are betting that bringing ODM into government will be good for tax evasion and shady business. And these are serious guys I’m talking about. There’s lots of strange bedfellows in Kenyan politics right now…very surprising to me that ODM is being supported by poor people who feel that they’ve been locked out by the Kibaki govt and rich people who feel that they’ve been locked out by the Kibaki govt.

Google jobs in Africa

Couple of new Nairobi and Joburg listings. Just got back from a couple of days in Nairobi. Regular punditing resumes tomorrow.

AOB: PNU (Kibaki’s new outfit) has been labeled “Porojo na Ukabila”….hehe guys in Nairobi are fast.

Confession…

I watch Big Brother Africa.

I know.

I got sucked in.

Ati first just to see what the fuss is about, and then as “background” when I’m working at home, and then so I could contribute meaningfully to office storos. But I knew things were thick, when I timed the eviction show this past Sunday.

So now, without disclaimers. I watch Big Brother Africa.

Mzalendo featured on BBC Outlook

I was interviewed by BBC Outlook about Mzalendo yesterday, the questions were great and I think the interview came out pretty well (it’s always painful to listen to myself on radio/tv though). Click here to listen, the story is at the very end.

They really are edible.

Thanks everyone who left a comment/emailed on the transitions to solids. Cereal is still a challenge – so far cerelac, 4C porridge, and oatmeal have been rejected. We’ve come full circle and are back to rice cereal with some fruit in it. So far so good. Carrots can be sneaked in with loads of sweet potato. Key word is sneak. I once got confident about my “masking” abilities and took it too far, Gabi figured it out and proceeded to shut her mouth firmly (she also hits the bowl and spoon when she’s not interested and hums with every spoonful when she loves what she’s eating). Other interesting things – she likes water over juice – I’ll ride that while it lasts, can’t get enough papaya, and will not eat anything with even the hint of lumps…hopefully that changes once the teeth show up. Sitting properly now, still hates “tummy time” so I’m wondering if she’ll ever crawl. Stretches her arms when she wants to be picked up…learned that yesterday. Trying to laugh out loud (she currently giggles/howls), but ends up doing this fake cough thing instead…it’s the funniest thing.
