A Better Life Beckons In Africa

Story in the Washington Post about African immigrants moving back home after basically getting tired of the 24-7 hustle of life in the West and tired of worrying about the recession.

I’m definitely seeing this a lot with my friends / peers – you do give up luxuries and there are frustrations but you get to the opportunity to re-center, rest, and even have time to pursue things you are passionate about.

Can relate on some level. Even those of us with “professional” jobs are deciding this is enough. You get out of work rushing to pick up the children before daycare closes, otherwise you are fined. You rush early, and can’t stay for the after hours drinking and networking. Or rush home miss a meeting, and stay up late working to prove that you are a team player, even though you had to leave early because your child is sick. With outsourcing it is worse, you work on the other countries time to schedule meetings, and get the info you need. Slowly, but surely, I am burning out.

  • When you commit, you have to have a plan and be ready to live with the realities of life back here- not difficulties, because it’s just how things are different, and there are tradeoffs in every aspect of life. e.g. you get may get bad roads, but there’s no DUI and speeding tickets.
    – That said I think the adjustment is much harder for school going kids & teens – so do it while single or when kids are still young

  • Bemuse, I am with you 100%.

I’m with Bankelele, deciding to live home or overseas is about trading one set of challenges for another set. Kenya with all its peculiarities is a great place to live IMO.

  • Home or away? I choose home every time, no contest! People tend to ignore social/cultural ties until it’s too late.

    Is there a choice?

I always thought that most KTs prefer the West & Co. because of job opportunities.

  • I not to mention my buddies appeared to be analyzing the good guides from your web page and all of a sudden developed an awful feeling I never expressed respect to the web blog owner for them. Those men are actually passionate to see all of them and have in effect in truth been taking advantage of those things. Appreciation for getting considerably kind and then for picking out variety of ideal subject matter millions of individuals are really wanting to understand about. Our honest regret for not expressing appreciation to earlier.
