Election Update 30 Dec 3:45 (ECK Briefing)

– Teargas thrown at KICC

– Members of the public kicked out of the briefing hall.

– GSU is general services unit

– Kivuitu gone to announce the briefing from another room, I think.

Raila holds an impromptu press conference.

– ODM has raised issues of serious concern not just to ODM, but to the rest of the country. They want the ECK to come out with a verdict that reflects the will of the Kenyan people. Kenyans don’t want to be cheated.

– ODM has evidence which confirms that the figures which the ECK is going to use are false figures. These issues had been raised earlier this morning with the ECK during consultations.

– Ruto speaks. It is important to realize that ODM is not joking, serious allegations are being made. Showed a copy of the document from Molo signed by the returning officer 55,755 Kibaki, 75,000 was read by the ECK – the returning officer is in the building and willing to confirm this and unwilling to act on its own document and listen to its own officers. There are officers of the ECK who have refused to be part of the doctoring and have gone home. There is one officer who is going to blow the whistle.

– An officer of the ECK speaks. Claims he is a whistleblower. Form 16 A is delivered by the returning officers to the ECK at the Commission for the process of tallying, nothing additional is supposed to be added only tallying and presentation to the ECK. There is open alteration going on at the KICC. His conscience will not allow him to keep quiet. He is putting his life on the line by speaking. Some constituencies numbers have been topped up by about 20,000. Said that officers are being asked to doctor at KICC until the right result is obtained.

I’m amazed that the ECK thought that folks would take doctored numbers at face value given the checks and balances of having agents and the Form 16A.

its really terribe whatever going to happen there in kenya Kibaki is to be blamed

Unbelievable! If only the ECK would act responsibly, admit that there have been irregularities and agree to recount, this would go someway to restoring confidence in the process. This behaviour is completely irresponsible, reckless and mad.

  • Ory, many thanks for keeping us posted throughout. We are sad that a government we entrust with our lives indulges in rigging of high calibre. Our politicians should know that Kenya is not their for the taking; they only exist to fullfil our will – they have failed us, not once but many timea. I pray for the safety of all kenyans back home.

  • i respect Kivuitu so much and I wish he could own upto his credibility for the past years. anyway, i wouldnt be surprised if ECK doctored results in favour of Kibaki…may be they are paying for the jobs he gave some of them some months ago!!! Or do you guys think Ki8baki didnt know what he was doing firing some old guards from the ECK???

Moi was quite a political giant but what a peaceful transition that was in 2002!!! ECK we are waiting!! God bless kenya!!

I have always thought Kibaki was an ineffective but essentially inoffensive leader. But reading these updates I have to wonder, why is it so critical that he remain as president, why the almost blatant attempts to have the ECK announce results when there are real questions as to their validity? Is Kibaki really willing to take office under these circumstances? What does that say about him?

And where is he as all this confusion and descent into chaos is going on? Is he still not the president until the official transfer of power to whoever will be determined to have been elected on Dec 27? Why has he not done something to alleviate the tension that engulfing the nation?

Phil at http://www.kumekucha.blogspot.com/ is reporting power blackout at KICC now and saying jamming devices are being used to slow down the information coming out of Kenya. Noticed that Mashada has been disconnected earlier. Live coverage has been stopped, journos are relying on cell phones.

  • Kibaki has just graduated out of the Moi School of Advanced Machiavelism. No wonder they have been so close in the recent past.

  • Rottuk

I read mischief in all the ECK moves now. Why are they not decisive enough to announce results like Chesoni when he was chairman when he announced results in 1992 even if all kenyans knew that it was not the right results. Kivuitu should announce results or redress the whole issue by retallying all the votes.

This has been a highly scrutinized process from start to finish, with the whole world looking on. Until a couple of days ago, the ECK was being lauded for its professionalism and competence. I seriously doubt that the Commission would shoot itself in the foot with the blatant kind of rigging, in its own headquarters, that is being claimed. I’d like to see them come forth and respond to these allegations.

    Peace be with you all.

  • So, now that ECK has declared Kibaki winner amidst all the doubts what next? It si so wrong to throw the country in chaos…

  • for an update visit http://www.kentv.net. This is trouble in waiting!! If Kibaki is really the ‘GOOD’ that the people of Kenya thought was only being corrupted by his former advisors, I dare him to come out and tell the people that he wants the counting of the presidential votes counted!!! Free and fair!

  • i cant believe this!!! With whom will Kibaki form his next government now that he does not have MPs? Something is amiss here…Kivuitu there is something you are not telling us…You owe Kenyans and the world an explanation, Mr. ECK, Sir.
