Building Apps for Mobile Phones

Ethan Zuckerman has an interesting post on, among other things, a project called EPROM that is trying to encourage people in developing nations to learn how to build applications for mobile phones. The project currently has a program running in Kenya (Kilifi and University of Nairobi).

Some slides from classes they run , including Python for mobile apps, are available here. (An aside this could be a great topic for the next Bar Camp…).

This is great stuff not just from a skills building perspective, but also because the program will provide seed funding to assist with the commercialization of programs. It’s one thing to develop a cool app, but that doesn’t put food on the table (progress will be getting to a stage where young Kenyans are motivated by more than just the hope that they’ll make money). Skunkworks guys – are you familiar with this program? What’s your take on it?

Apparently Safaricom is holding competitions with a similar kind of motivation – the development of local mobile apps.

And in somewhat related good news, I can report Fab Lab is finally coming to Kenya. I’ve been excited about the Fab Lab concept ever since I heard Neil Gershenfeld speak at Poptech. The first lab will be launched either late this year or early next year in ARC-Kenya just outside of Kisumu. It is anticipated that the second lab will be based in the University of Nairobi.

AOB: Mama news – baby doing well, growing fast and going through a phase where she can only sleep if I’m holding her at night…right now I’m blogging with her on deep asleep on my lap…now that’s skills development :-)

Geekery

I’m still without an ADSL line so in between that and Gabriella, my surfing is spotty at best. The 3-G card hookup was fantastic like for a week and a half then the speed dramatically dropped…classic bait and switch…MTN is rubbish. I haven’t even dared to check my aggregator recently…opening my gmail alone is an achievement.

Anyway, today was a good speed day so I had the chance to check out some new cool social networking apps.

While I was busy having a baby, people have come up with the idea of micro-blogging.

1. Jaiku – (I wonder if this could be used for election reporting? Anyone interested in exploring that?)

2. Twitter

For comparisons of the two, click here and here.

Also worth checking out is Semapedia coming out of Ghana. Check out a review by BBC (nice to see African developers getting the spotlight).

Women where at thou?

Several of my virtual and real buddies have received scholarships to attend TED Arusha. So far, all the receipients that I know are male…a trend similar to the Blogging Indaba last year… and I’m curious to know whether there are any women out there who’ve applied for/ received a scholarship to TED. Please leave a comment if so.

Incidentally, the very successful first BarCamp Kenya (congrats Riyaz et. al), appears to very male-dominated, even accounting for the subject matter…no fault of the organizers, because word was put out and everyone encouraged to attend or volunteer to present etc…so again I wonder where are the women?

New Corruption Reports

Still no good connectivity at home so the hiatus continues. Gabriella is also decidedly nocturnal for now so keeping watchie hours. Will try and post pics soon and one of these days do proper posts on motherhood.

In the meantime, please check out these two excellent reports on local corruption scandals – Anglo Leasing Pt II. and at Posta compiled by Mwalimu Mati (formerly of TI et. al) at Mars Group. I love seeing local organizations taking advantage of the internet to get the word out, hopefully other local organizations with good data will follow suit instead of letting reports rot in their offices without seeing the light of day.

AOB: Did Githongo ever relaunch his blog?
