Hypocritical UNEP campaign

The UN(EP) recently launched a campaign to encourage people to “Kick the CO2 habit.” That’s all well and good except for the fact that while, the UN is busy encouraging us to reduce carbon emissions, as Dipesh points out, they don’t seem to have a problem with staff members driving around Kenya (and I’m sure other countries) gas guzzling cars. This is not to say that we should not all do our part to save the environment, however, the originators of the campaign should be setting an example for everyone else.

Dipesh has asked readers to help send a message to the UN(EP) about the hypocrisy of their campaign by uploading more pictures of UN-plated gas guzzlers on this Flickr page, or sending a message to the UN directly. Will be interesting to see if someone responds.

Would be great if someone could do this with the Kenyan goverment (GK) cars – lets see where the mwananchi’s hard earned money is going?

Yeah, but Dipesh is a bit too harsh… Then, as I said in his blog, I am not sure that it is legal to publish cars’ plate without blurring the content of the plate.

    Hi Ory,
I agree but the UN hypocricy goes beyond gas guzzlers, for example the whole debacle of the Village market in nairobi, which is right next to the UN- and which NEMA (National environmental management agency) has been after for years coz it is built on a marshland or some protected water catchment area (hived from karura forest) and its sewerage system pollutes the surrounding area (if you walk to the UN, you will be hit by the stench of an open sewer all the way from the bus stop, past the agro forestry (i forget which one) organisation’s gatebut of course the UN types wouldnt know in their airconditioned 4wd’s and staff buses. Of course most of them wouldnt like to see it closed down because it is a good place to shop and play without necesarily coming into contact with the watus…
But my biggest concern is that the UN seems to be built rather to close to Karura forest- is this an early grabbing of the forest? and i have heard that the easiest way to annoy a UN staff member is to mention that little tidbit (i wont call it a fact because i cannot verify its accuracy)

  • I also recently heard “that on World Environment Day, one of the flagship events was to launch a “less-fuel” guzzling…errr….lawn mower. Apparently it looks a bit like a rat with a handle…”
Can you just picture the scene: all those unepies oggling over their new ecofriendly lawnmower while there are hundreds of 4wd cars parked behind them…

It is a simple matter of practice what you preach. I would have assumed that UNEP would have done a thorough internal survey of how energy efficient and eco-friendly their own vicinity is and with their staff. Had they done that it would have possibly spared them all this. UNEP need to set an example for everyone else to follow. If the people that are churning out ‘sustainable living’ information to the masses and don’t act on that very information they provide…what incentive is that for people to follow!? Infact it seems more like it is putting people off and all our energy is now being spent on criticising the organisation trying to bring about a change…but in the wrong way. Come on people, get your act together…we don’t have time to be wafty and half hearted in our efforts to save this planets environment and biodiversity.

Mingi times I feel like some of the individuals and organizations promoting ‘saving the earth’ lifestyles expect everyone but themselves to act. As of ’06, Al Gore inconveniently flew around in private jets to promote green lifestyles.
