Attack on the Standard

It’s seems like the proverbial shit will not stop hitting the fan in Kenya.

Just landed back from San Francisco to find this mess.

I mean what the hell is this all about? I’m totally perplexed. Doesn’t this “crack sqaud” have better things to do, for instance like solve real crimes? Wasn’t the Kalonzo story among one of the more innocuous one’s published by the Standard? It would have totally gone under the radar if the government hadn’t reacted to it…I really fail to see what is causing this reaction. I think the problem with Kibaki’s advisers is that these guys suck even at being politicians, because anyone with a single political bone in their body would not pull such a move. Now even the stories in the gutter press will be believeable. And Michuki? Does the guy still think he’s a DC for the colonial government?

Anyway, I’m tired of ranting about this government nowadays…I rather reserve my “airtime” towards things that actually make a difference. Besides, Ms. K and Mental have done an excellent job of saying what needs to be said. Also worth a read is Keguro’s protest campaign (see the comments esp) and Jewel in the Jungle’s round-up of links on the story.

The one silver lining has been the reaction of the Kenyan people; their voice is strengthening day by day and to me that is what Kenya needs the most – a non-complacent citizenry.

  • Thanks for the Hat Tip Ma’am and welcome home from the sunny SF Bay Area:smile: That coverage on the TED Conference 2006 was really interesting (ref: TED blog) and if any TED attendees were skeptical about the impact of blog authors from Africa and blogs about Africa, then they won’t be after this. The story is snowballing through the blogosphere. FYI BoingBoing picked it up yesterday.

Hope that someone at KWR is keeping tabs on the blog impact and contributions re: the Kenya Shake-the-Snake Affair. Watch your step over there, them snakes are pretty riled-up right now as they hiss and spit while headin’ for the exit.

  • Hi,
Has anybody wondered who the hell were those white guys leading the squad. Apparently they called our citizens niggers uring the raid. Were these really police men or people contracted by those shady ministers? somebody needs to find out. Nobody seems to have picked that up, are we still under the colonialist rule? those are the people who used to sight security concerns and that is why we have those laws in our constitution. This is one of the reasons why we should have that constitution overhauled.

  • I find it inconceivable and foolhardy that:

    1. The President hasn’t still found it fit to comment
on something supposedly touching on our national, and
    by extension, his own security.

    2. That Hon. Michuki expects to win back public
opinion with his belated attempts to sell the new
angle to this incident. The Tuesday protests, if
allowed to proceed, could just be the turning point in
this saga (unless something gives between now and
then. I certainly expect some clergymen to counsel the
nation to be “patient” this Sunday).
Someone has sent me an e-mail concerning the current
affairs in our country, which I now take the liberty
to share with you and others:
    ******

A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see
the farmer and his wife open a package.

“What food might this contain?” The mouse wondered –
he was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap.

Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the
    warning.

“There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a
    mousetrap in the house!”

The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head
and said, “Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave
concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I
    cannot be bothered by it.”

The mouse turned to the pig and told him, “There is
a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the
    house!”

The pig sympathized, but said, “I am so very sorry,
Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but
pray. Be assured you are in my prayers.”

The mouse turned to the cow and said “There is a
mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the
    house!”

The cow said, “Wow, Mr. Mouse. I’m sorry for you, but
it’s no skin off my nose.”

So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and
dejected, to face the farmer’s mousetrap alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the
house — like the sound of a mousetrap catching its
    prey.

The farmer’s wife rushed to see what was caught. In
the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake
whose tail the trap had caught.

The snake bit the farmer’s wife. The farmer rushed her
to the hospital, and she returned home with a fever.

Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken
soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard
    for the soup’s main ingredient.

But his wife’s sickness continued, so friends and
neighbors came to sit with her around the clock.
To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig.

The farmer’s wife did not get well; she died. So many
people came for her funeral, the farmer had the cow
slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them.

The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the
    wall with great sadness.

So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem
and think it doesn’t concern you…., remember
    — when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk.

We are all involved in this journey called life. We
must keep an eye out for one another and make an extra
    effort to encourage one another.

  • Currently, the demo system used by Logan and his colleagues is too expensive for commercialization. One of the reasons why it is so expensive is that they used platinum (Pt). They nevertheless tested the process with a cheap non-precious metal catalyst (MoS2) and though they got a lower hydrogen output, the results have been satisfying.
