As Erik notes, we will be doing a lot more than smart phone development, but the team has been making great progress on the Java and Iphone apps (and soon Android) and we would love to get your feedback. “Struggling to make an impact on your target audience? Are issues unresolved despite your best efforts? Are issues unresolved despite your best efforts? Do the internet, mobile phones or information design present exciting possibilities in advocacy but difficult to take advantage of? The Info Activism camp, to be held in Bangalore, India from February 19 to 25, offers rights advocates the chance to make a greater impact in their work. The seven-day camp, organised by Tactical Technology Collective helps advocates to make the best use of information, communication and digital technologies to achieve their objectives. The first-ever international camp on info activism will feature 120 participants, picked through a competitive selection process, and who will not only learn but also share skills and techniques to aid in the process of advocacy. Workshops, group discussions, interactive sessions and live demos, which to a large extent will evolve from participants’ proposals, are all part of the one-week programme. Info-Activism is a compelling approach to launch campaigns and bring issues to light. The camp presents a great opportunity for rights advocates to enhance their skills.” EDIT: Link has been fixed, apologies. – Tech scene buzzing in Africa (and yes not just in South Africa). Particularly happy to see the Skunkworks event getting underway…this is an outcome from Barcamp Nairobi and other forums where local developers have been complaining about the fact that the government and local companies don’t support local software developers…now the govt & industry have demonstrating that they are willing to engage and I hope the developers step up (although notice was late). An aside: Would love to know if there’s any action in West Africa. – Remember the milk: online to do list mgmt. – Lifehacker’s best of the best. – Get catalogue of free online college courses. Just released paper by Juliana Rotich and Josh Goldstein. The application process is now open and closes on October 20th. “Ideal fellows include those who have already decided on a career in venture philanthropy, those who are seeking a career at the highest levels in the corporate world but want to better understand and impact problems of global poverty, and budding social entrepreneurs who want to learn about managing organizations in the most demanding settings.” MyC4.com is a web-based platform that allows you to look up a list of African entrepreneurs who need funding for their projects and to offer them loans. You bid a certain interest rate, which is accepted as long as it is below the maximum the entrepreneur is willing to accept and as long as others have not bid below you. You can lend as little as 5 euros. Default rate is in the single digits. Hat tip David! (Apologies for infrequent posting, WordPress + my host acting up on me) Available here in soft copy. Love the tagline: An African voice telling African stories. About Africa 24: “A24 Media is Africa’s first online delivery site for material from journalists, African broadcasters and NGO’s from around the Continent. A24 Media’s business model ensures that all contributors receive a wide and previously unknown exposure to their content, thereby generating sustainable and generous revenues from the sale of their stories on a 60:40 basis in favour of the contributor. Most importantly, the contributor will continue to OWN the copyright of the original footage.” The founder Salim Amin was a speaker at Ted Global in Arusha and it’s lovely seeing his dream come to fruit. Those of you who’ve watched my TED talk know this is something I’m very passionate about…enough with the bitching…let’s get our voices out there and get things did already! |
