We Media conference

Posted by Ory Okolloh in Africa and blogs, Blogging, Journalism, Kenya

I was one of the speakers during the Africa session. Wilfred Kiboro was also one of the panelists and it was quite interesting to hear him wax eloquently about how the Nation was all about new media and how their main problem was lack of trained journalists (or did I hear him wrong?? I hate listening to my voice on audio, so haven’t verified. I tried to ask him whether he could honestly claim that they are no unemployed potentially great journalists in Kenya but didn’t have the chance).

The conversation bounced around quite a bit and it ended up not being as substantive as I expected it to be. I did, however, manage to use the word crap in a sentence. My first instinct was to use bullshit, but I quickly censored myself. Listen on here and here.

There are enough good journalists in Kenya.

What is lacking, are good editors.

There are loads and loads of good journalists in Kenya but there are not enough media outlets for them, plus it doesnt help that there is alot of politics that go on before you see your byline in the press.Or to be frank I think that Kiboro is talking out of his ass!
Congrats on being a speaker!btw:I am doing a course on politics in Africa this summer and I will most def holla at you for info sources and opinions because I know that I will have to set my prof straight time after time after time!

Kwanza Kiboro should start the journalists well. Nation has a record of paying their correspondent little money
